Sony confirms new PlayStation 5 console and release date

Sony has announced it plans to launch its new console, the PlayStation 5, at the end of 2020.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and president Jim Ryan confirmed the PS5 would be "launching in time for Holiday 2020" in a post on the company's blog page.

"These updates may not be a huge surprise, but we wanted to confirm them for our PlayStation fans, as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation," he wrote.

"I'd like to thank all PlayStation fans for continuing the journey with us, as we embark on the future of games."

The post also gave details about the console's new controller, with Mr Ryan saying that he wanted to "deepen the feeling of immersion" for users.

The new controller will not have the "rumble" technology which has been used in controllers since the PlayStation launched in the 1990s.

Instead, the technology will be replaced with haptic feedback, which the company says will mean the controller can react differently in each game.

"Crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field," Mr Ryan said in the post.

The controller's trigger buttons are also going to be changed in an innovation called "adaptive triggers". Game developers will be able to program the resistance of the back two trigger buttons, L2 and R2.

It means that sensations will vary depending on what is in a user's hand on-screen.

"In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions," said Mr Ryan.

System architect Mark Cerny also confirmed further details for the console in an interview with technology magazine Wired.

The PS5 will allow gamers to dive straight into single-player missions and multiplayer games without them having to boot up a game.

The next controller will also use a USB Type-C connector to charge and is said to be heavier than the current DualShock 4 controller used for the PS4.

While a specific weight of the controller hasn't been revealed yet, product manager Toshi Aoki said in the interview that it would be lighter than the current Xbox controller "with batteries in it".

Mr Ryan said Sony still planned to release games for the PS4 before the launch of the PS5, with a sequel to survival horror hit The Last Of Us arriving in February.
